In the morning the campsite owner came with his bucket of fish- full this time of bream- and said that he was going to grill fish for everyone on the campsite this evening! Bring beer! Spent the whole day on the beach. In the afternoon we headed out to the supermarket to get some alcohol and supplies to make a potato salad for the dinner this evening. Got clean and made a great potato salad using wild fennel from the track to the campsite. The dinner was great- fish grilled perfectly and we even ate the eel that he'd caught the day before which was amazing. He also had a bottle of wine that he'd made himself from his own grapes. We tried some schnapps- which was horrendous- and we found out that Croatians also use schnapps as mozzy repellent! The other campers are the slovenian guy and two german couples and we had a nice evening chatting with everyone. Obviously the schnapps and red wine and fish didn't sit well though and I was sick in the night!
17th June
We stayed one more day on the campsite purely because it was too hot to pack up in the day and we had to wait until the sun had gone down before we could even think about putting the chairs and tables away!
18th - 21st June
Drove right down the coast past Split and found a nice campsite near a town called Baska Voda. I'm afraid the next week won't make for very interesting reading- we did nothing but read and sun bathe! In fact it was even too hot here to go to the beach until late aftrenoon, but the beach was a long stretch of pebbles full of mostly Croatian tourists sitting in the shade of the trees. There was also really good snorkelling. Had a few beers in the beach bars whilst listening to funny Croatian pop music (sounds like the Eurovision in all the bars.) We also bought local spirit made from sour cherries from a lady who came around our campsite. It's delicious.
21st - 24th June
Same as above really! Found another nice shady campsite further south- don't know where but we had a view of the end of Hvar Island across the sea. Nice rocky beaches where Pete got on his snorkel and dived down to collect me loads of dead sea urchins, which are very pretty, and I made a mobile out of them. We also went to a 'fish party' one night in the bar and got mackeral, salad, bread and a glass of wine each for four pounds! It was great.
24th June
Driving back up the coast towards Trogir to meet Petes mum we stopped for one night in a town called Omis. The sun has started to chill out so we parked up in the campsite and went for a wander round the small cafe lined alleyways. It's a pretty medieval town with a big fort on the mountain above it a canyon behind it. We got about half way up the mountain to see the fort but didn't make it all the way- we've got so lazy! After dinner back at the campsite we went out for a sunset fish off the jetty (unsuccessful again) and then for a couple of beers in the town. We found it funny to be in a town again with lots of people and we realised we've been spending too much time in campsites! There was a huge storm whist we were in the bar so everyone had to move inside and we found out you can smoke inside here. Walked home in the rain and watched some TV on the computer.
25th - 27th June
Drove less than an hour further north to a completely empty campsite right on the beach near a town called Dugi Rat. Did some more relaxing. We got out Petes 60 metre fishing net and dragged it out- the beach was really long and shallow- and still caught nothing! We did it twice and Pete literally watched the fish jump over the net to escape!! Not having any luck with this fishing business.
27th June
Today we moved to Trogir. We had tried to book a campsite and they'd said that they didn't take bookings but we headed there anyway to try our luck as it was only a 2 kilometre walk from Trogir town. We arrived and got told 'oo we don't have much room for people who didn't book'. Arseholes. And ended up getting squished between two permenant caravans with fences and gardens in a place where we could barely get the van in and definitely wouldn't be able to drive it out with any ease. Slightly annoyed but at least we had a nice view of the sea and a rocky beach right in front of us (we can't complain really!) Set out to explore Trogir and look for Petes mums hotel. Another really pretty old medieval town with tiny alleyways on a small island just off the main land. After an hour or so of winding around the streets looking for the hotel we came off the island to the main land and finally saw a sign for it! Followed the road alond for what felt like a long time in the heat and then asked in a restaurant where the hotel was. They said it was 2 kilometres further 'you're not going on foot are you!?' It was too hot for any more walking so we went back to the old town for a beer and some people watching and then back to the campsite later.
Great view of Trogir as we walked in from the campsite.
28th June
Another campsite day today. Swam and jumped off the jetty outside and got everything tidy for Petes mum in the morning!
